Dr. Mr. Raintwater,
I am interested in contemplative writers and noticed that you are reading The Relentless Tenderness of Jesus by Brennan Manning. I saw that his Ragamuffin Gospel is highly praised by Michael W. Smith. Would you recommend Relentless? Can I get a copy through the physical IHOP bookstore? (I tried to find it at the online store but it didn’t come up.)
Thanks,
Larry Zanetti
Thats awesome Larry, I love contemplative authors. They are largely my favorites. I picked that book up at barnes and nobles. I do not think you can get it at IHOP, amazon will have it though for sure.
In him,
Josh
Mr. Rainwater,
First of all thanks for getting back to my husband, Larry. We have just read The Relentless Tenderness of Jesus by Manning and found some false teachings especially in chapter 6. I don’t know if you got there get but it speaks about God getting sexually aroused by the precence of his people and that God has sexual intercourse with people. I believe that this book used to be at IHOP because a person that was on staff wrote about it also. Do you know if they used to sell it there? Chewing on the meat and spitting out the bones may be okay at times but that book, in our opinion is extremely offensive. Do you think that way too? Based on your blog it is obvious that you love the Lord. God bless!
Hi, katie!
No problem responding to your husband, I’m glad i could help. I have not gotten very far in that book yet. I do read allot of authors (especially catholic mystics) whom do have many areas in which they are in error. But I was very touched, at least by the first chapter. I loved it. I don’t know if it used to be at IHOP. I know that Allen has sited it in His syllabus, “The excellencies of Christ”.
In my humble opinion, the “chew the meat, spit out the bones” principal still applies here. That part of the book is to be discarded. Clearly. But brennen manning has written allot of good as well, which I want to wrench from his books. I do not think that the entire book is offensive. I’m not brushing that off casually, thats a deeply erroneous statement. Those are the times where i just write in the margin “REALLY BAD”, and move on. haha.
Just my opinion : ) hope it helps!

Hey Joshua,
Thanks for writing back. Do you happen to know an intern at IHOP named Luke Bongiardino. He is plays the guitar and loves the Lord. He has been there for about four years and loves it. His Dad married us. I KNOW there are a lot of people there so you probably don’t. : )
I have read some of your posts and they are interesting and can tug at the heart. It is neat to see a young man who loves God. Has the Lord given you direction after IHOP? or are you waiting on Him for direction.
My husband would like to write you if that is okay? Have a great week and God bless.
Katie and Larry
